2025: The Year That Tested Me (and Taught Me Anyway)

12/24/2025

Picture
If I had to sum up 2025 in one sentence, it would be this: it was a year of endurance.

Not graceful endurance. Not quiet resilience. Just the kind where you keep going because stopping isn’t an option. This year came with pain—actual, physical pain.  Two injuries took hold of my hip and foot, and anyone who lives with chronic pain knows how it quietly steals energy, motivation, and patience. Movement became harder. Rest never felt like enough. And the mental toll of always “pushing through” added another layer I didn’t expect. As if that wasn’t enough, my husband’s arm and shoulder issues put an early end to our golf season—something we genuinely love and look forward to every year. It sounds small, but those shared moments matter. Losing them felt like another reminder that 2025 had its own plans. Then life did what it does best: threw in the unexpected. My best friend was injured when a golf cart flipped on her, breaking her shoulder. Watching someone you love get hurt is brutal—but what followed was me stepping in to take on her lash clients. I didn’t hesitate. I just did what needed to be done. That decision meant working day and night for most of the year, sacrificing what little free time I had left. Somewhere along the way, exhaustion piled up, stress eating became real, and—let’s be honest—I gained about 40 pounds back. That one stings. But pretending it didn’t happen wouldn’t be honest either.

Professionally, the year was mixed. I met some incredible people—genuinely good, fun, inspiring humans—and that part I’m grateful for. But I also watched my spa clientele slowly disappear, not because of anything I did wrong, but because the economy tightened hard. People lost jobs. People got scared. And yes, political decisions—like Trump’s tariffs on Canada—had ripple effects that hit real people, real businesses, and real livelihoods. Wellness becomes a luxury when survival is the priority. Creatively, I had big intentions. I started my second gluten-free cookbook—something I was excited about and proud of. And then life happened. I made it through Chapter One. That’s it. Part of me felt disappointed, but another part knows that even starting mattered. So yes—2025 had good.
It had bad.

And it definitely showed me some ugly. But here’s the thing: I’m still here. I learned how much I can carry—even when I shouldn’t have to. I learned who I show up for instinctively. I learned that rest isn’t optional, it’s necessary. And I learned that seasons of survival don’t define your future—they simply prepare you for it. As I step toward 2026, I’m not chasing perfection. I’m chasing alignment. Healing. Sustainability. Space to breathe. Space to create again. Space to move without pain. Space to enjoy the things that make life feel lighter—golf seasons, good food, laughter, meaningful work. I’m choosing hope—not because everything is fixed, but because I believe it can be better. 2026 doesn’t need to be loud.

It just needs to be intentional. And that feels like light enough to follow.

2024: A Year of Loss, Growth, and Cosmic Wonders

12/31/2024

Picture
As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on a year that was anything but ordinary. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, milestones, and mysteries—a year that tested me, inspired me, and left me wondering if we’re truly alone in the universe. (Spoiler alert: probably not. More on that later.)

Saying Goodbye to Cherished FriendsThis year, I lost friends to cancer—a reminder of life’s fragility and the importance of cherishing the moments we have with those we love. Each loss was a heavy blow, a void that can never truly be filled. Yet, in my grief, I’ve found gratitude for the memories we shared, the lessons they taught me, and the love they brought into my life. Their legacy lives on in the hearts of everyone they touched, including mine.

New Beginnings and Bold VenturesAmid the challenges, 2024 was also a year of new beginnings. I opened a consulting company, a dream that’s been years in the making. Aurora Spirit Consulting was born out of my passion for cultural preservation and community development. Every project has been a labor of love, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished so far. It’s humbling to step into this new chapter, knowing that my work can make a meaningful impact.

Another Story to TellIn the midst of it all, I found time to author another book—a process that’s as cathartic as it is rewarding. Writing allows me to channel my thoughts and experiences into something tangible, something that hopefully resonates with readers. This latest work feels particularly personal, a reflection of the year’s highs and lows, and I’m excited to see how it’s received.

The Cosmic and the CuriousNow, let’s talk about the really unexpected part of 2024: the UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, for those not in the know), drones, and that eerie fog rolling across North America. It’s been a wild year for skywatchers, and I’ll admit, I’ve caught myself scanning the skies a little more often. Maybe it’s the influence of too many late-night documentaries, but I’m starting to think aliens might actually be among us.
I mean, mysterious lights? Check. Strange weather phenomena? Check. A fog so thick it feels like something out of a sci-fi movie? Triple check. If the little green men are out there, they probably find us endlessly entertaining. And honestly, who could blame them? Humans are pretty weird.

But on a serious note, these moments have reminded me of how vast and mysterious our world—and beyond—really is. There’s so much we don’t know, and that’s both humbling and thrilling.

Gratitude and Hope
As I close out this chapter, I’m profoundly grateful. This year also brought the profound joy of reconnecting with my homeland and my people in the North, deepening my connection to my roots and traditions. Grateful to be alive, to have my health, and to continue pursuing my passions. I’m thankful for the love and support of family, friends, and colleagues who’ve stood by me through it all. And while 2024 was far from easy, it was a year of growth, resilience, and hope.

Looking ahead, I’m optimistic about 2025. It’s a blank page, a new opportunity to create, connect, and continue making a difference. Whether it’s expanding my consulting company, penning another book, or simply appreciating the small joys of everyday life, I’m ready for whatever comes next.

Here’s to the FutureSo here’s to 2025: may it be a year of kindness, discovery, and maybe even a little more clarity about those mysterious lights in the sky. And if the aliens do decide to make formal contact? Well, I’ll be here, ready to offer them a cup of coffee and a warm welcome. After all, life is about embracing the unknown, isn’t it?

To everyone reading this: thank you for being part of my journey. Wishing you all a joyful, peaceful, and wonder-filled New Year.

2024: A Year of Change, Challenges, and the Wonders Beyond Earth

11/26/2024

Picture
As 2024 comes to an end, it’s clear this has been a year to remember. From political shifts and economic struggles to strange alien sightings, the world has been buzzing with activity. Whether good or bad, 2024 is a year we won’t soon forget.

The World on Edge: Politics and ProblemsThis year was filled with major political drama. Tensions rose between NATO and Russia, with NATO warning Europe to prepare for conflict as military planes buzzed close to Russian airspace. Meanwhile, in the U.S., Donald Trump made headlines again with plans to impose hefty tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, stirring fears of trade wars.

In Canada, the government tried to help with rising costs by announcing $6.3 billion in spending to provide relief for families struggling with high rents and food prices. While helpful to some, others worry about how the extra spending could affect the country’s finances long-term.

Fighting Climate Change TogetherAt the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan, leaders discussed how wealthy countries could help poorer ones deal with the effects of climate change. A proposed $250 billion annual aid package sparked debate—some said it was a step in the right direction, while others thought it wasn’t nearly enough. As the planet faces bigger environmental challenges, it’s clear that global teamwork is more important than ever.

Eyes on the Sky: UFOs, UAPs, and Miami AliensWhile we’ve faced plenty of challenges here on Earth, 2024 also gave us a lot to wonder about in the skies. The topic of UFOs (now called UAPs, or Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) went mainstream as governments around the world released new documents about unexplained flying objects.
One of the year’s strangest stories came from Miami, where glowing, humanoid “aliens” were reportedly spotted late at night in residential neighborhoods. Videos flooded social media, with people debating if it was a prank, a hoax, or something truly out of this world. Some witnesses were convinced they saw real aliens, while skeptics dismissed it all as a joke.

Adding to the mystery, scientists picked up unusual signals from a nearby star system, sparking questions about whether we might be hearing from other civilizations. Even though there’s no clear answer, these discoveries reminded us of just how much we still don’t know.

Pop Culture and the Mystery of SpaceThe fascination with UFOs and aliens also showed up in pop culture. Hit movies like Visitors and The Intergalactic Neighbor broke box office records, while TikTok users shared thousands of videos claiming to capture strange lights in the sky. Whether real or imagined, 2024 had everyone looking up and asking, “What’s out there?”

Looking Back on 2024This year was full of contrasts. On one hand, humanity worked to tackle problems like rising costs, climate change, and political instability. On the other hand, we were reminded of how fragile things can feel when tensions rise or the environment struggles.

But 2024 also reignited a sense of curiosity and wonder. Whether it was strange sightings in the night sky or questions about life beyond Earth, this year reminded us to dream big and stay curious. As we move into 2025, let’s keep searching for answers—both here on Earth and far beyond the stars.

A Year of New Journeys, Old Roots, and Fresh Discoveries

Reflecting on the past year, I’m amazed by the journey it’s been—full of new experiences, reconnections with my roots, and some entertaining surprises along the way. This year marked the beginning of my path with Aurora Spirit Consulting, diving into cultural projects that bring me closer to my heritage while supporting meaningful community initiatives. One of the most impactful experiences was traveling to Délı̨nę. It was more than a journey north; it was a return to my Dene roots and a powerful reminder of the strength in our traditions and stories.

Life in the Okanagan has also brought its own set of new experiences. I went on my first wine tour (a must when living here!) and discovered not just great wines but also an appreciation for the unique lifestyle this region offers. Another unexpected twist? I decided to truly learn the game of golf. Although I’d played casually before (mostly for the attire, let’s be honest!), this year, I focused on actually learning the game and playing it correctly. It’s been humbling and rewarding, and I’m even considering joining a women’s league next year to keep me challenged—and on my toes!

While the year wasn’t without its share of heartache—I lost several loved ones who I miss dearly—it’s reminded me of the importance of family, heritage, and resilience. Reconnecting with my roots through my consulting work has been healing, giving me perspective and deepening my commitment to preserving and celebrating our cultural heritage.

As we approach November and December, I’m already filled with renewed excitement and high hopes for 2025. This past year has brought me new friends, opportunities for growth, and so much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey, and here’s to the new adventures ahead!

Picture
As we bid farewell to 2023, I find myself reflecting on a year that has been a roller-coaster of emotions—a tumultuous journey filled with both heartache and moments of unexpected resilience. In the midst of personal challenges and the profound loss of my cherished fur baby girl, I've learned that even in the darkest times, there is a glimmer of light. As the year draws to a close, I'm ready to say a heartfelt goodbye to the struggles and welcome the promise of a better future.

Navigating Loss: This year brought the profound loss of my fur baby girl, a companion who filled my life with joy and unconditional love. The void left by her absence is immeasurable, and the grief has been a heavy burden to bear. Yet, in the midst of sorrow, I've come to appreciate the profound impact she had on my life and the love she brought into my world.

A Year of Challenges: Beyond the loss of my beloved pet, 2023 presented its fair share of challenges, each seemingly more daunting than the last. Navigating through these difficulties often felt like an uphill battle, and there were moments when hope seemed elusive. Yet, it's crucial to acknowledge these struggles, for they are an integral part of our journey.

Silver Linings: Amidst the storm, there were glimpses of sunlight that broke through the clouds. The support of friends and loved ones, unexpected moments of kindness, and the resilience that emerged from adversity all became beacons of hope. These silver linings, though at times subtle, carried the power to lift my spirits and remind me of the strength within.

Creative Resurgence: In the face of loss and challenges, an unexpected and beautiful transformation took root. The pain of losing my fur baby inspired me to embark on a new journey—one that led me to discover the writer within. I am grateful to share that I became an author in 2023, with eight published books and six more in the works. This creative resurgence, born from grief, has become a testament to the healing power of self-expression.

Welcoming a New Chapter: As the clock ticks toward midnight, I embrace the opportunity for a fresh start. It's not about erasing the pain of the past but about turning the page and welcoming the possibilities that lie ahead. The challenges of 2023 have shaped me, but they do not define me. I step into the new year with a hopeful heart, determined to find healing, joy, and continued creative inspiration in unexpected places.

In bidding farewell to 2023, I release the weight of the challenges it brought. It's a goodbye to the tears, the heartache, and the trials that tested my resilience. Yet, it's also a goodbye to a version of myself that existed within those difficulties. As I look forward to the promise of a new beginning, I carry with me the lessons learned, the strength gained, the love that endures, and the newfound passion for storytelling. Here's to a better future, to brighter days, and to the resilience that whispers, "I am ready for what comes next." Goodbye, 2023—thank you for the lessons, the hope, and the unexpected journey into creativity that accompanies the dawn of a new year.

Picture
As the days grow shorter, the air crisper, and nature prepares for a season of rest, we find ourselves approaching the winter solstice—a time of celestial significance and a beautiful opportunity for introspection. The winter solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, inviting us to embrace the quiet magic that comes with the stillness of winter.

  1. The Astronomical Wonder: The winter solstice, occurring around December 21st, marks the sun's southernmost point in the sky, creating the longest night and the turning point toward longer days. Understanding the astronomical significance adds depth to our appreciation of the changing seasons.
  2. Embracing Darkness: In a world that often values constant activity and perpetual brightness, the winter solstice invites us to embrace darkness. Metaphorically, it symbolizes a time to turn inward, acknowledging and accepting the shadow aspects of ourselves. It is through embracing the darkness that we can fully appreciate the return of the light.
  3. Cultivating Stillness: Winter's hushed landscape encourages us to cultivate stillness in our lives. Amidst the holiday rush, taking moments of quiet reflection becomes a form of self-care. Whether it's a walk in a snow-covered forest or a cozy evening by the fireplace, these moments allow us to connect with the peace that comes from within.
  4. Celebrating Renewal: As the longest night passes, the winter solstice signals the gradual return of daylight. This celestial event embodies a powerful metaphor of hope and renewal. The solstice teaches us that even in the darkest moments, there is an inherent promise of brighter days ahead.
  5. Honoring Traditions: Throughout history, diverse cultures have celebrated the winter solstice through various traditions. From Yule festivities to lighting candles in recognition of the returning light, these rituals remind us of our connection to nature and the importance of honoring the cycles of life.
  6. Creating Winter Rituals: Embrace the winter solstice by creating your own meaningful rituals. This could involve lighting candles, setting intentions for the coming months, or simply spending quality time with loved ones. Crafting personal traditions adds a layer of significance to this celestial event.
  7. Gratitude for Nature's Wisdom: Winter teaches us profound lessons about the cycles of life, patience, and the beauty of dormancy. Take a moment to express gratitude for nature's wisdom and the opportunity to align our lives with the rhythm of the seasons.

Conclusion: As we stand on the cusp of the winter solstice, let's welcome the quiet magic that comes with the season. Embrace the darkness, cultivate stillness, and celebrate the inevitable return of the light. May this winter solstice be a time of reflection, renewal, and the creation of meaningful traditions that connect us to the profound beauty of the natural world.

Picture
Life's journey is a mix of highs and lows, and sometimes we encounter storms that leave us with deep wounds. Grief, loss, and betrayal are like heavy clouds that cast shadows on our path, making it essential to acknowledge and navigate these tough moments.

The Impact of Loss: Losing someone we care about, whether through death or a broken relationship, can feel like an unbearable weight on our shoulders. It's important to recognize the profound impact of these losses and understand that healing is not about forgetting but finding a way to carry the memories with us.

Dealing with Betrayal: Betrayal is a painful wound, one that cuts to the core of trust. Whether it's a friend's deception or the end of a relationship, betrayal can shake the foundations of our lives. Acknowledging the hurt and its wide-reaching effects is a crucial step in the journey toward healing.

The Healing Process: While these experiences can feel overwhelming, it's essential to remember that healing is possible. It's not about erasing the pain but finding ways to cope, seeking support, and allowing ourselves the time to mend. Healing is a journey of small steps, self-compassion, and the strength to face each new day with resilience.

To those facing the shadows of grief, loss, or betrayal, remember that you are not alone. In these moments of darkness, there is strength within you that can weather the storm. Reach out for support, be kind to yourself, and embrace the healing journey. Your resilience will guide you to a place of light, where the scars you carry become symbols of the strength you've discovered along the way. You've got this.

Yours in light,

Carla-Jean

Celebrating Christmas Beyond Consumerism: Spreading Joy in Meaningful Ways

11/25/2023

Picture
As the festive season approaches, adorned with twinkling lights and the promise of joyful gatherings, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of holiday consumerism. While exchanging gifts and decking the halls are cherished traditions, it's important to remember that the spirit of Christmas goes beyond the materialistic glow. This year, let's embrace the true essence of the season by finding meaningful ways to connect with and support those who may be less fortunate.

A Season of Giving, Beyond Gifts

**1. Volunteer Your Time: This Christmas, consider giving the gift of your time to local charities and community organizations. Soup kitchens, shelters, and food banks are often in need of extra hands during the holiday season. Whether it's serving meals, wrapping gifts for those in need, or participating in a community event, your time can make a significant impact.

**2. Donate to Charities: Instead of focusing solely on personal wish lists, allocate a portion of your holiday budget to charitable donations. Many organizations run holiday campaigns to support those facing hardships. Whether it's contributing to a food drive, sponsoring a family, or supporting a cause close to your heart, your donation can bring warmth and hope to those in need.

**3. Spread Kindness: Acts of kindness don't always require grand gestures. Small acts, like shoveling a neighbor's driveway, baking cookies for a friend, or writing heartfelt letters to loved ones, can create a ripple effect of positivity. Share the spirit of Christmas by spreading kindness wherever you go.
**4. Host Inclusive Gatherings: Reach out to neighbors, colleagues, or acquaintances who may not have family or close friends to celebrate with. Consider hosting an inclusive gathering, potluck, or virtual event to foster a sense of community and connection.

Connecting Beyond Presents

**5. Create Memories: Instead of focusing solely on material gifts, prioritize experiences and create lasting memories with loved ones. Plan activities like a festive movie night, a winter hike, or a game night that encourages shared moments over tangible items.
**6. Support Local Businesses: If gift-giving is part of your holiday tradition, consider supporting local businesses and artisans. Your purchases not only contribute to the local economy but also add a personal touch to your gifts.

**7. Eco-Friendly Celebrations: Make environmentally conscious choices during the holiday season. Consider sustainable gift wrapping, reducing single-use plastics, and opting for locally sourced or homemade decorations. A green Christmas is a gift to the planet.

Remembering the True Spirit...As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, let's shift our focus from the materialistic aspects to the joy of connecting with others and spreading kindness. By embracing a spirit of generosity, we can make a meaningful impact in the lives of those who may be facing challenges this holiday season.

Merry Christmas, not just in words, but in the actions that reflect the true spirit of the season.

Have a safe and happy Holiday Season from my house to yours!
